Eleanor Christopher Obituary
Eleanor Tate Christopher, 81, left an amazing legacy on May 17, 2026. She joined the heavenly hosts, passing peacefully and surrounded by family at the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House after many months of care there for Alzheimer's and cancer. Joyful until the end, Ellie brought joy and laughter to those she touched.
Ellie to most, Ms. Ellie to many, and Mom, Mama,Yaya, Francie, and Narcissus to a precious few -
was born on December 29, 1944, in Huntington,West Virginia. Ellie grew up with her mother and
father, Catherine and Eastland Potter in Louisville, Kentucky, with her two younger sisters Sarah
Potter (Carwell) and Elizabeth Potter (Reeves), where she graduated from Waggener High School in
1963. It would surprise no one who knew her that her senior superlative was Personality Plus. She
carried that title all her life.
After high school, Ellie made her way to Murray, Kentucky, to study at Murray State University -
and Murray, in turn, made its way into her heart and never left. She became one of its great
treasures.
Beginning as a legal secretary, Ellie assisted many attorneys in Calloway County. Then transitioned
to her twenty year plus career at the Calloway County USDA Farm Service Agency. Her community
service extended in every direction: she served on multiple community boards from Murray Civic
Music to Murray City Parks. She was an active member of PEO and First United Methodist Church. She
gave her time and herself in joyful service of the Lord.
She was kind, generous, joyful, exuberant, mischievous, hilarious, pensive, quiet, thoughtful, and
full of wonder. She had a gift of making friends wherever life took her and her warmth, humor, and
genuine interest in others drew people to her. Many of her friendships spanned decades rooted in
deep care that endured through various seasons of life. In recent years, she continued to gather
new dear friends who quickly became an important part of her life. To know her was to be loved by
her, and you knew you were one of the lucky ones. Ellie was equally at home lighting up a room or
sitting in quiet stillness on her front porch on a warm summer night listening to the frogs sing
their chorus by her farmhouse pond. She moved between worlds with grace because she belonged to all
of them.
Ellie possessed a capacity for awe that could not be matched - she could find beauty in a pine cone
on the ground, a tobacco stick leaning against a fence, a rock turned over in her palm. She could
create something extraordinary out of the treasures in her pockets, and she gave all she had to
anyone who crossed her path. She was also the queen of tiny surprises, perfectly timed to lift a
spirit at exactly the right moment.
Whether delivering fresh vegetables to a friends porch in the cover of darkness or writing a heartfelt and encouraging note, Ellie, had a gift for knowing what people needed and had courage to meet those needs.
In equal parts Ellie loved dancing, laughing, sharing stories with friends, taking walks with her
grandchildren, road trips with Marshall, listening to music, gathering treasures in nature,
dressing in costume, reading a good book, cheering for the Racers, praying for others, talking to
God, caring for those in need, and loving her family well. There will never be another one just
like her. May the saints rejoice at her homecoming!
She is preceded in death by her beloved companion, Marshall Garland. She is survived by her
daughters, Kelsey Tate Miller (Ben), Carroll Lane Parsons (Brad), and Courtney Yezerski (John
Eric); her step-daughter, Lochie Shannon Christopher; her grandchildren, Ella, Daisy, Leah,
Bentley, and Vivien Miller; Lillianna, Ellenie, James, and Luke Parsons; Connor, Evan, and Grant
Yezerski; and Christopher Carubba; and her sisters, Sarah ""Sallie"" Potter (Carwell) and Elizabeth
""Betsy"" Potter (Reeves); and niece, Amy Ross (Carwell).
A service honoring the life and faith of Ellie will be held on Friday, May 22nd at Church of the
Holy Apostles in Collierville, Tennessee at 12pm. Family will receive friends during visitation
from 11-12pm.
A celebration of life service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Murray, Kentucky on
Saturday, June 13th, at 4pm. Family will receive friends during visitation from 3 - 4pm.

Eleanor and I were friends and playmates early in life as we both grew up within a block of one another on Hycliffe Avenue. We both attended Greathouse Elementary and often met at the corner of Hycliffe and Meridian and walked to school together. Waggener followed and while I don’t recall having any classes together, we remained good friends. Unfortunately, after high school we lost touch after a time and I regret that. Reading her obituary tells me what a wonderful person she remained throughout her life.

Eleanor and met on the steps of Greathouse in the 6th grade. She was everyhing her obit says and more. A sense of humor too big to contain, a trick up her sleeve at all times. A personality to fill a room. I was honored to chosen her co-personality plus our senior year. I know that she went to Murray where JTandy and I ran into she and Claudia at a football game. What a loss to our classmates, she was VERY special.
Elaine Goodrich (Boerner)
This is heartbreaking. Ellie was personality plus and always the life of the party. Rest in peace dear friend.
